Comments for Answer 1

The answer of this student can be identified as a good effort since she has aimed in answering the expected areas of the activity. Accordingly, the student has discussed about the role of Human Resource Management (HRM), its link with strategic management and Organizational Behaviour (OB). Along with few scholarly explanations to these key targeted areas, she has presented her own perceptions and rationales, which are substantial. Thus, the student believes that HRM is a complex management function that has to be performed with the assistance of other functional managers for training, empowering, rewarding and motivating employees, which is accurate. Further, the student has cleverly interpreted that OB is a ‘co-pilot’ to HRM that ultimately assist proper functioning of HRM in organizations. ‘Culture’ is an attractive concept that the student has selected for further evaluations, and the way it has elaborated, reviewed and recommended along with her experiences in a multi-national organizational context is admirable.

In contrast, some negative points also can be identified throughout the answer. One main weakness is the lack of flow of the answer and lack of proper organization of the answer, where she has started mentioning one view on HRM that has presented by a previous academic and has elaborated her perceptions on HRM and again has reviewed on OB. But she has failed to present some valid definitions on both HRM and OB and their strategic aspects. For instance, if the student would have presented a proper definition of HRM which reveals that HRM is about “effective and efficient management of human resources in an organization, in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives effectively”, she could easily link strategic management (for evaluating the goals and objectives), leadership (for evaluating management of human resources) and culture to the topic in a more accurate manner. In addition, the opening of the problem and its background is not clear and adequate. Thus, it could be more attractive and reliable if the concepts were described and evaluated with practical scenarios in a more sequential and flowing manner.

In general, the answer is considered as a moderate answer and it needs more developments in order to make it satisfactory.

Comments for Answer in Activity 2 (by Stella)

It is apparent that this answer is a well-rich answer, in which the student has presented the expected key elements of the activity. She has proficiently developed the answer in a chronological manner by carefully and suitably discussing about human resource, its importance as an asset, management of human resources, impact of HRM on organizational performances, the importance of individual performance evaluation etc. Adequate literature and logical building of facts over each and every point is admirable, which have effectively directed towards the conclusion of the student stressing that when there is a lack of strategic human resources management practices, it will hinder the effective application of organizational behavioural concepts in organizational settings.

There are some minor numbers of negative flaws in the answer as well. Primarily, there is an absence of actual organizational applications in support of the discussed theories and conclusions. Since the response chain is based on a multi- national company, the student could have discussed about that context or another organizational context which is familiar to her.

Other than that, all the basic elements are appropriately discussed throughout the answer. Thus, it can be ranked as a satisfactory answer for the given activity.

This answer is furnished in a different perspective, while emphasizing the link between human and behaviour. The facts and ideas of the student have presented gradually by explaining the link between HR and behaviour and through that, the strategic link between HRM and OB. According to his evaluations and interpretations, HRM is considered as a facilitator for the production rather than being only another management function; which is true. The comments of this student support the answer of the first student, through which he has stated that employees and personalities are diverse and they result in diverse behaviours and afterwards, those diverse behaviours (and attitudes) creates the necessity of diverse HRM strategies. Theories and individual perceptions have combined accurately in order to convey required information.

But, some points are missing from the answer of this student. Even though, the link that has created through theories and student’s own perceptions are strong and accurate, it does not demonstrate an overall discussion on the organizational contexts and it has a lower link with the practical scenario discussed by the first student (i.e. the multinational organizational context with diverse culture) has forgotten from the discussion. Further, a practical context has not been evaluated as well. Thus, the answer is not adequate in relation to the expected activity guidelines.

However, considering the available answer and explanations, this answer can be identified as a moderate answer, which needs further improvements.
