Jala Jetwing is one of the leading hotel in Sri Lanka which follow the sustainable practices. Their services and the maintenance keep going through the environmental, economic and social sustainable manner including local people concern. I got the chance to know the practical application of sustainability along the visit of Jala Jetwing. It consist huge area, 56 acres. It handle sustainability in energy stream, waste disposal stream, JYDP and guest feasibility.

By the usage of solar energy, bio mass energy they fulfill their energy need. Solar energy is used for the electricity purpose. Bio mass energy is used for the cooking purpose and air condition use. Cinnamon is the source of biomass. They use low voltage LED bulbs, low energy consumed air conditioners to reduce the electricity. There is no use of LPG cylinders and other electrical cookers. Heat load is reduced by the use of ‘iluk’ grass for roof, insulating ceiling. They concern the natural light utilization for reception, main restaurant and bar.

They doesn’t derive the fresh water from the national electricity board. Drinking water for customers and the workers produce by the RO plant. Black water and grey water is purified separately by the wastewater treatment plant. Purified wastewater is used to irrigation and toilet flushing.by the improved toilet facility, amount of flushed water is reduced.

They try to produce minimum amount of waste particularly plastic items. They reduce the plastic bottles usage for drinking purposes. They have specify solid compost unit to manage the waste and they produce the compost for their gardens. They don’t depend on the municipal council for waste disposal.

Engineering unit responsible for RO plant, waste water treatment plant, air condition absorption system and bio mass boiler.in the RO plant sea water is purified by reverse osmosis process and demineralized water is produced. Drinking water is got from the demineralized water by essential mineral adding process.

Water vapor is produced from the cinnamon biomass boiler. It transfer towards the AC absorbing system to operate low energy consume air conditioner. Cooling is derived from heated water vapor. Another part of the water vapor bring to the kitchen for the cooking. They deliver much amount of cinnamon from the local cinnamon farmers and increase the livelihood of them.

They do biological treatment in the waste water treatment plant and maintain it properly. They have third largest solar panel system that help to reduce the electricity bill. They keep card key system to maintain energy efficiency in the rooms. They ensure the maximum involvement of staff and guests. Staff has been trained to reduce water usage.

They consider the local community development. They provide maximum recruit for local people, do maximum purchases of fruits vegetables and other local item. Due to the locally based transport people earn money from the foreigners.Jetwing has 83 employees from the local area which contribute 43 million salary. Hotel has JYDP ( jetwing youth development program) that improve the English knowledge and skill of local students. After the training program jetwing recruit them for their services.

They are going to develop the hotel further. They planned to do additional 100kWh solar panel system, bio gas generation plant, herbal garden and salt generation from RO reject water.
